Individual Opportunities

Job Seekers

Volunteer Job-Seekers come twice a month to work with parents who need help with job search, resume, and cover letters. Volunteers help residents log on to a central job seeking database and apply directly to open positions. Training will be provided on how to use this website.

Children at school

Children who are homeless are much more likely to struggle in school. Mary’s Place puts a special emphasis on providing additional support for the children in our shelter because we know that education is a ticket out of poverty for these students. We have a program that pairs volunteers with one student at a time so the children can have the help they need to work on their homework and improve their reading. Volunteers for Tutoring program must be 14 years or older. Reading Program volunteers must be 16 years or older. We ask volunteers to commit to coming once per week.

After-School Tutoring Program:  Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays 4-6 pm (September – May)
Summer Reading Program:  Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays 3:30-5:30pm (June – August)

For thirty years, volunteer dentists and oral surgeons have provided free dental services to those in our community who face insurmountable barriers to care. The individuals who come to our clinic for dental treatment typically are in pain and have little or no income, no insurance, and no ability to pay for dental care. Please consider giving some of your time to help those in need. You can perform extractions and/or restorative procedures and you can work as little or as much as you want.

Doctors & Nurses

In May 2016, we opened Mary’s Place Minute Clinic to help the families in our shelter access basic medical services. Volunteer Doctors and Nurses provide treatment for acute illnesses and minor injuries, administer influenza vaccinations, and coordinate care for complex or chronic conditions. Having an on-site, walk-in medical clinic reduces ER visits and provides convenience and comfort for our homeless families who are in crisis and facing so many challenges.

Current clinic hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, 10 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and, starting summer 2018, Monday, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. We are looking for additional providers to staff current hours as well as Monday evenings. Please consider giving some of your time to help.
